Different types of underlay explained

There are a few different types of underlay, so you need to be sure that you use the correct one for the type of flooring that you have. It is basically a thin layer of material. It sits between the subfloor and your choice of floor covering.  The most popular types are either for sound proofing or thermal resistance.

Here are some of the different types and what they are used for:

Thermal Resistance

If you are looking for an something to provide you with thermal resistance, then check out our Silver Bam. It has a tog rating of 0.9 so will give you a good level of insulation.  This is a great choice if you have wooden or bamboo flooring.

Sound Proofing

Underlays with sound proofing qualities have a decibel (dB) rating.  The higher the rating, the better they are a reducing sound. With a wooden floor, you should be looking for a rating of at least -25dB. We would recommend Cush N Wood underlay.

Underfloor heating

If you have an underfloor heating system you will need a specially designed underlay which will allow the transfer of heat.  It should be a low tog rating to provide the least thermal resistance.  Have a look at our range of underfloor heating underlays.
