How often should I sweep my wooden floor?

Sweeping and cleaning your wooden floor should be a quick and simple job. As with cleaning any part of your home, the best way to approach it is to adopt a regular routine.  How often you sweep your wooden floor will depend on the following factors:

• Which room the wooden flooring is in?

• Do you have any pets?

• What time of year it is?

Let’s go into a bit more detail about each of these.

Which room is the wooden flooring in?

This is important because you will need to think about how often the room is used and where abouts in the house it is.  If, for example, you have wooden flooring in your hallway, you will probably want to sweep it every day as you will naturally get a build up of dust, dirt and grit from outdoors.  Likewise, if your wooden floor is in a kitchen or dining room.  There will inevitably be crumbs and bits of food dropped that will need sweeping away to keep it looking fresh and clean.

However, if your wooden floor is in a room that isn’t used that often, or an upstairs room which is likely to have less dust, dirt, crumbs, etc. dropped, then you could sweep less regularly.

Do you have any pets?

This of course relates to pets that shed hair or may bring dirt inside their paws.  No need to worry if you have a goldfish! With a dog or cat, you are likely going to want to sweep your floor on a daily basis to keep on top of any loose pet hair.

What time of year is it?

Depending on the time of year you may want to sweep more or less often.  For example, in the summer months you are more likely to have doors and windows open, which can create more of a build up of dust and dirt on your floor.  You should keep on top of sweeping to avoid any damage to your floor.  Similarly, in winter months, when it’s wet outside, people are more likely to bring in grit and stones on their footwear, which should be swept away immediately.
