What is Oak flooring?

Oak flooring means that the species of tree used to make the planks of floor is an Oak tree.  Generally, the colour of Oak flooring is a light brown colour with some golden and blonde tones running throughout.  However, the colour of solid Oak flooring can slightly vary as it is a natural product. It is ideal for homes with a classic yet sophisticated atmosphere. Although the natural colour of oak is a light brown, you can get very different looking Oak by adding colour stains or coloured oil to the surface.  There are hundreds of different styles and shades of Oak flooring to choose from.

What is solid wood flooring?

Solid wood flooring is basically a plank (or parquet block) of flooring that is made from one solid piece of wood.  Solid wood flooring usually has a tongue and groove fitting profile.  This is the most traditional way of installing a wooden floor and has been around for centuries. Once the plank has been made, the surface is finished with protective layers of either oil or lacquer. Alternatively, the surface is left unfinished so that you can add your own protective oil once the flooring has been installed. Solid wood flooring must be fixed into position using either glue, secret screws or secret nails. If you are not sure whether solid wood flooring is the best option, have a look at our range of engineered Oak flooring.  It is far more versatile and there is a wider range to choose from. Once installed, engineered Oak looks exactly the same a solid oak flooring.
