Floating a wooden floor is the quickest and easiest way of installation. The term ‘float’ refers to the way in which you lay it over an underlay. It does not get fixed into position; it floats loosely on top of the underlay. Although you may want to float your wooden floor, there are certain types of hardwood that cannot be floated as they must be fixed down.
Which types of wooden floor can I float?
You can only float engineered hardwood flooring. Solid wood is not structurally stable enough and needs fixing into position. You must also glue down parquet block flooring, even if it is engineered. 
Engineered hardwood flooring is a great choice. We have over 200 floors for you to choose from. It is extremely versatile, not only in the way that you can install it, but also in which rooms you can use it in. As engineered flooring is dimensionally stable it can be used with underfloor heating and in areas where temperature fluctuates regularly (like conservatories). What is the alternative fitting method?
If you do not want to float your floor, then you can fix it down directly to the subfloor. You have the choice of:
• Firstly, gluing it down with flexible flooring adhesive
• Or, secret Nailing it (tongue and groove flooring only)
• Alternatively, secret Screwing it (tongue and groove only)
