How to choose the correct underlay?

An underlay is a thin layer of material which sits between the subfloor and your choice of floor covering.  When choosing the correct underlay for your particular project, there are a few things you will need to think about:

• Where is the underlay going?

• What type of flooring do you have?

• Do you want thermal resistance from the underlay?

• Would you like a sound proofing underlay?

• Are you using underfloor heating?

Here are some of the different types of underlay and what they are used for:

Thermal Resistance Underlay

You will want to choose this type of underlay if you are looking for something which provides you with thermal resistance.  Our Silver Bam underlay has a tog rating of 0.9 so will give you a good level of insulation.  You can use this underlay with all types of wooden floors.

Sound Proofing Underlay

If you are looking for an underlay to provide sound proofing, this is the one for you. All underlays with sound proofing qualities have a decibel (dB) rating.  The higher the dB rating, the better at reducing sound. If you are using a wooden floor, you should opt for an underlay with a rating of at least -25dB.

Laminate Flooring Underlay

With all types of laminate flooring, you should make sure that you use the correct type of underlay. We have a specific range of underlays for use with laminate floors

LVT Underlay

If you are using LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) flooring, then check out our specific range: Vinyl Underlay. There are a few different types depending on where your floor is being installed.  Feel free to contact us for advice and guidance if you are unsure which one is best for you.

Underfloor Heating Underlay

If you are using an underfloor heating system you will need a specific type of underlay which allows the transfer of heat.  It should be a low tog rating to provide the least thermal resistance.  Have a look at our range of underlays for underfloor heating.
