Winter care for hardwood floors

During the winter months it is important to take extra precautions when looking after your hardwood floors. The harsh elements can be impossible to avoid and can create problems for wooden floor owners. The main problems that homeowners are faced with is the dirt, water and debris that can be brought in from outside. Hardwood floors can easily be damaged and scratched by grit and salt that is usually used to protect the streets outside from freezing conditions. Rainwater, slush and snow are also harmful if brought in on outdoor footwear and left to sit on a wooden floor. They can cause the floor to become dull and warped.

However, with some simple care and maintenance, damage can be avoided and your hardwood floors should continue to retain their freshness and lustre throughout the colder months.

Winter care tips

    • Place doormats at all entrance doors to catch any gravel, grit, snow or water brought indoors on footwear. Keep these mats clean and dry and even consider having spare mats for extremely wet and cold days.
    • Be prepared for extra wet days and keep towels by the front door in case clothing is wet. The towels can either be used to remove any excess wetness from clothing, or to immediately wipe up any water that may have dripped on the floor.
    • Remove shoes and footwear before walking on you hardwood floor. Keep wet or dirty footwear in a porch or garage if possible and do not them on your wooden floor. If you do not have a porch or garage then consider creating an area by your front entrance door to place wet or dirty footwear, e.g. a spare doormat specifically for footwear. Remember to let friends and family know this rule too!
    • Clean and dry your pet’s paws as soon as they enter the house. This is another good reason to keep spare, clean towels at the front door.
    • Sweep and clean your hardwood floors regularly. During the winter months, it is advisable to sweep away any dirt and grit on a daily basis, or as you notice it. Cleaning your wooden floors every couple of days will also help to reduce damage or dullness arising from the harsh conditions outside.

Hardwood floors can last a lifetime if cared for properly, so remember to follow these simple steps to ensure your wooden floor retains its lifelong beauty.
