We often get asked what the difference between herringbone and parquet flooring is. The answer is actually that herringbone is one of the patterns created by using parquet block flooring. So generally speaking, parquet is the flooring and herringbone is the name of the pattern created.
What is herringbone?
As already mentioned, herringbone is a pattern that can be created by using small parquet blocks of flooring. The flooring is laid out in a V shape, with each block set at a 45 degree angle to the next. Herringbone is by far the most popular design created and is probably the most distinctive and recognisable pattern made with parquet blocks.
Installing a herringbone pattern is quite an advanced floor fitting skill, so we would always recommend using a professional and experience flooring expert.
Here is an example of what it looks like.
What is parquet?
Parquet is a small block of wooden flooring. It is much smaller than the typical plank style flooring and can be used to create different geometric patterns and even a border around the edge of the room. It gives your home a characteristic alternative to plank flooring.
There are different species of wood to choose from, and different colour stains which alter the tone of the wood without covering the beautiful grain pattern. If you want something bolder, then maybe have a look at bamboo parquet, as it is available in more vibrant colours.
