When deciding to finish or refinish your hardwood floor, it can seem quite overwhelming with all of the choices of colour stains and protective coats of oil or lacquer.  Why not read the following: What is the difference between oil, varnish and lacquer? which may give you a little more information about the different types of finish you can achieve with different products.  Also, have a look at our Wood Flooring Guide which explains all of the different surface finishes in more detail.

If you are unsure how to finish your flooring, it is always advisable to consult a professional flooring fitter who has been technically trained.  They will be able to complete the job for you in a professional manner, ensuring that it is done correctly.

Why do I need to protect my unfinished floor?

If you are thinking about having an unfinished floor, then you will need to be aware that it is raw wood and can become damaged very easily if not protected properly.   The raw wood can easily absorb moisture and become discoloured or warped, and it can become dented and damaged from being walk on.  You must protect the surface of your floor with either an oil or a lacquer as soon as it has been installed

You also have the option of adding a colour stain to enhance the wood’s natural beauty.  This is done before adding the oils or lacquer.

If you have not yet chosen your unfinished floor, the have a look at our Unfinished Engineered Wood Flooring, or our Unfinished Solid Wood Flooring.

When should I re-finish my existing wooden floor?

If you hardwood floor has been installed and looked after properly, then it can last for years without needing re-finishing.  Depending upon your floor, and how much it has been used, it can be anything from 5 – 20 years. You may start to notice that it has become dull and is looking worn.  This is usually the correct time to start thinking about sanding and re-finishing.  If done properly, by a professional and technically trained flooring specialist, it can revive your wooden floor and bring back its original charm, lustre and beauty.

Are there any alternatives?

One alternative would be to have a pre-finished floor, so that it is ready to use as soon as it has been installed.  Have a look at some of our engineered wood and solid wood flooring options.  However, if you have a different type of project to complete, then have a look at some of our other ranges:

Door Finishes | Furniture Finishes | Decking Treatments | Wood Panelling Finishes | Garden Furniture Finishes
