Why has my hardwood floor cracked?

If you have cracks in your hardwood floor, the problem is likely to be low humidity and low moisture in the room, causing the wood to dry out.  This could happen for a number of reasons, including: open fires, log burners, underfloor heating system running too hot, and also the frequent use of air conditioning units.

As wood is a natural product, it responds to changes in humidity and temperature by expanding and contracting.  In humid and warm weather, your flooring will expand, and in dry, colder weather the flooring will contract.  This is a natural characteristic of wood and is nothing to worry about.  However, if your flooring has started to crack, then it is because the moisture and humidity levels are extremely low and beyond the capabilities of the woods natural movements.

If you notice some cracks in your floor, then try to replace some moisture in the air by placing a bowl of water under a radiator or on a windowsill.
