Why does my hardwood floor creak or squeak?

If your hardwood floor has started to squeak or creak it may be because your subfloor was not level before the hardwood was installed.

If the subfloor (the existing floor in the property) was uneven and the hardwood flooring has been installed on top, then the planks of flooring will not have a solid base and will therefore be put under stress when walked on.  Over time this can cause your flooring to move, creak or squeak.

To prevent this from happening you should ensure your subfloor is completely level by using a spirit level or straight edge.  If it is not level then you can line wooden subfloors with sheets of plywood, and you can use a levelling compound on a concrete subfloor. If your hardwood floor is already creaking then you may want to take up your floor, level the subfloor and re-lay your hardwood once it is level and dry.
