Hardwood flooring with a click system is designed to allow simple and straight forward installation, and is usually the preferred type of flooring for homeowners who want to fit a wooden floor themselves. It is becoming increasingly popular because of its simplicity and because less skill and equipment is needed for the installation process.
The click fitting system means that the planks of flooring easily click together and lock into place, eliminating the need for nails, screws or glue.
Each plank of click system flooring has interlocking joints that are machined onto the edge of the plank during the manufacturing process. They provide a snug and secure fit, reducing the chance of gaps between the flooring.
Click system flooring is usually installed over an underlay, a method called ‘loose laid’, where the planks of flooring are clicked together but not adhered down to the subfloor. This particular type of flooring can alternatively be glued directly down to the subfloor if necessary.
It is rare to find solid wood flooring with a click fitting system, and is mainly available in engineered hardwood, bamboo flooring and laminate flooring. One disadvantage of click system wooden flooring is that it cannot be installed over joists; it must have a solid base.
The alternative to click system hardwood flooring is the traditional tongue and groove flooring.
