Wooden floors are relatively easy to look after.  As long as you follow a simple cleaning routine, your floor will stay looking fresh and new for years to come. Here are some top tips for cleaning your wooden floor:

Sweep every day

By sweeping your floor every day, you are keeping it free from dust and dirt, which can quickly build up if ignored. We would recommend using a soft bristle brush or broom, which is sure to be gentle on your floor. You can opt to use a vacuum cleaner, but please ensure you have the correct attachment.  There is usually one that is specially designed for wooden flooring.

Clean with a pH neutral cleaning spray

You don’t need to clean your floor every day, but we recommend at least once a week, after sweeping. The cleaning solution you choose should be pH neutral and suitable from wooden flooring. Bona Wooden Floor Spray Mop is the perfect choice as it has a removable pad, built in spray handle and a refillable cleaning cartridge.

Wipe away any spills promptly

The last thing you want is a damaged wooden floor.  All types of wood can absorb water or liquid that is left to soak in to the surface.  This can cause some discolouration and sometimes even cause the flooring to warp or bow. This is why it is essential that you wipe away excess water as soon as you notice it.

Never use a steam mop

A steam mop may seem like a good idea to thoroughly clean your wooden floor.  However, the steam can penetrate into the wood and cause permanent, irreparable damage.

Cleaning products to avoid

Certain cleaning products can damage a hardwood floor, so it is best to know which types of products to avoid.  Here are some to avoid

• Furniture polish: it can leave a slippery residue on the surface of your floor, which can be difficult to get rid of

• Acidic or abrasive cleaning products: the harshness could scratch, stain or even discolour your floor
