What actually is solid wood flooring?
So, solid wood flooring is exactly as it sounds; flooring that is made from a solid piece of hardwood. The wood used is most commonly Oak, but sometimes other species like Walnut, Hickory or Maple. The wood is cut from the tree trunk and then shaped and sanded into planks (or parquet blocks). Solid wood flooring usually has a tongue a groove fitting profile and can either be pre-finished or unfinished. If you choose a pre-finished wooden floor, it means that the surface of the wood has already been protected and you can walk on it straight away. With unfinished flooring you will need to add protective layers of oil to the floor once it has been installed. When deciding on which solid wood flooring to choose, you will have to think about the following:
• Which species of hardwood – different species will give you different looking floors with different colours, tones and grain patterns.
• The style of floor – you can choose between planks or parquet blocks. You may even be able to find chevron flooring in solid wood too.
• Whether you would like a pre-finished floor or an unfinished floor.
Where can I use it?
You can use solid wooden flooring in most rooms in your home, including bedrooms, living areas, hallways and dining rooms. With solid wood flooring you do need to fix it into position by either gluing it down or secret nailing it to the subfloor. The only areas where you should not use solid wooden flooring is in rooms with excess water (bathrooms, utility rooms, kitchens, etc.) or in conservatories, or rooms with large amounts of glazing. Solid wood cannot cope with constant fluctuations in temperature and humidity, so it is not compatible with underfloor heating either.
