Problems with Hardwood Flooring: Uneven Subfloor

Before you start to install any kind of hardwood flooring you need to ensure that your subfloor is completely level.  If it is not level, the planks of flooring will be put under stress when walked upon, and over time may move, crack, creak and become damaged.

How to prevent an uneven subfloor from happening

Your subfloor will need to be tested to ensure that it is completely level.  This can be done with a spirit level or straight edge.  Once you are sure that it is level, you can start to install your hardwood flooring.

If your subfloor is not completely level then you must level it out.  There are two ways that this can be done:

1. For wooden subfloors - line the subfloor with plywood sheets which are at least 8mm thick.

2. For a concrete subfloor - use a levelling compound – this must be left to dry completely and be moisture tested before you install your floor, otherwise moisture damage could occur.

How to resolve the problem once it has happened

If you hardwood floor is already damaged, cracking or moving then unfortunately there is little that can be done.  Your only option is to remove the flooring, level your subfloor, and then install new hardwood flooring.
