Preventing dirt from accumulating

The best way to keep your hardwood flooring clean and fresh is to prevent dirt and water from accumulating in the first place. Spills and accidents should be wiped away immediately to ensure the water does not penetrate the flooring and cause it to warp or swell. Doormats at entry doors should be used to wipe dirt off shoes before walking on the floor, or ideally shoes and footwear should be removed altogether to prevent dirt and water from staining or scratching the floor.

General cleaning advice

Hardwood floors should be swept on a regular basis with a soft brush, in high traffic areas consider sweeping on a daily basis. If a hardwood floor is dirty and it is walked on (with or without shoes) the dirt and dust particles may end up scratching the floor. Once the floor has been swept, a microfibre cloth/mop should be used along with a PH neutral wooden floor cleaning spray to clean away any stains or built up dirt that may be on the floor. Always clean the floor in the direction of the grain. If a microfibre cloth/mop and cleaning spray are not available then water and a damp mop can be used, but may not be as effective at removing dirt and stains. If using water and a mop, ensure that the mop is wrung out totally before using on the floor. If the mop is wet and too much water soaks into the floor, it can cause the hardwood floor to warp and distort.

What products can I use to clean my hardwood floor?

• It is recommended that a PH neutral wooden floor cleaning spray and microfibre cloth is used to clean hardwood flooring. This will ensure the floor is clean but residue and streak free.

• A damp mop with clean water can be used. Ensure the mop wrung out so that it is damp, and not wet as excess water will damage hardwood flooring.

• If using a vacuum cleaner, ensure that a cleaning head designed for wooden floors is used to minimise the chance of scratching the floor.

• Do not use oil, wax or furniture polish. They can make the surface of the hardwood floor slippery and leave a residue.

• Do not use any products that are abrasive, acidic or contain ammonia. They can damage or scratch hardwood flooring.

• Do not use a steam mop on a hardwood floor. The steam will cause the floor to warp.
