Hardwood flooring: random vs fixed length planks

When deciding upon a hardwood floor, one of the choices you will have is whether to choose random length or fixed length planks of flooring. Random length flooring is hardwood flooring that comes in packs with boards of different lengths (ranging from approximately 300mm – 1600mm) and fixed length flooring is hardwood flooring that comes in packs of fixed lengths (usually around 1850mm).

Generally random length flooring is found in a solid wood format and fixed length flooring is found in an engineered wood format. However, engineered wood flooring can now be found with mixed length planks to mimic the appearance of solid wood flooring.

Hardwood flooring- random vs fixed length planks

Random length flooring planks can offer a natural and authentic looking floor. When installing random length flooring planks it is important to start with different length planks and continue in a completely random way. Fixed length flooring planks can either create a ‘brick bond’ look, of uniform blocks, or you can create a more random look by cutting the starting boards to random lengths and then continue by using the fixed length planks.
