Whether to choose dark hardwood floors or light hardwood floors for a space in your house can be a difficult decision. Light and dark flooring provide completely different looks so thoughtful consideration should be taken to ensure that you make the right choice. Dark flooring is becoming more and more popular and can be a fantastic visual contrast against light walls and interiors. The downside of dark hardwood flooring is that it does show up dirt and dust more than a lighter coloured floor. Ultimately the choice is yours, but it is worth thinking about the size of the room, the décor of the room and the amount of natural light the space will get.

Hardwood Flooring: Dark Wood Vs Light Wood

The size of the room

A light coloured floor can have a tendency to make a smaller room look bigger and likewise, a dark coloured floor can make a larger room look smaller. Before deciding between dark or light flooring it is essential to think about the visual appearance and illusion that it may create in your room.

The décor of the room

If you are choosing a new floor for a room that is already decorated and furnished then it is important to take time to consider all colour options of flooring to ensure they complement the existing decor and achieve the look you want. If however you are redecorating the whole room then you have more scope with your flooring choice. Dark floors can work well in a room to give a rustic or modern feel, however they can make a room appear darker than it actually is. When a dark flooring option is chosen it is a good idea to have lighter coloured walls and furniture to offer a contrast.

The amount of natural light in the room

It is important to remember that darker coloured floors will make a room look darker, and conversely, lighter coloured floors will make a room look lighter and brighter. So, if your room does not have much natural light then you may want to consider a lighter coloured floor to allow the room to be as bright as possible.
