Advice when using rugs on hardwood floors

It is likely that a rug will move and slip around when placed on a hardwood floor. To avoid this, non-slip grip sheets can be purchase and placed underneath the rug. These will help to reduce any unwanted movement of the rug, ensuring that it stays exactly where you want it and reducing the risk of accidents.

It is advisable to clean your rug with a vacuum cleaner on a regular basis (at least once a week) to avoid any debris building up and being transferred onto your hardwood floor, which may cause damage. The rug itself should also be moved so that the flooring underneath can be cleaned using a soft bristle brush and wood floor cleaning spray with a microfibre mop.

Before the rug is replaced, ensure that the hardwood flooring is completely dry to avoid any damage from excess moisture. After long periods of time, sunlight can cause discolouration to hardwood floors, so if a rug is left in the same place for a considerable amount of time there may be a noticeable mark where it has been. The colour of a hardwood floor changes the most during the first few months of being laid, so it is advisable not to use a rug for at least two months after the floor has been installed. Further advice is to move the rug around slightly each month and to keep blinds and curtains closed in periods when the sun is at its strongest.
