Plank Type

Solid wood flooring is available in either the regular ‘plank’ style of flooring or alternatively in a parquet block. Plank solid wood flooring is a the more well-known type of flooring. It is made from one piece of solid wood, which has been machined into a plank of flooring with a tongue and groove fitting profile. The planks are usually random lengths to give a natural looking floor, and you will have a choice of different species of woods for the flooring and different styles of surface finish.  Parquet solid wood flooring, or Herringbone as it is sometimes known, is much smaller block of flooring.  They are still made from one solid piece of wood, but with their smaller size and uniform shape, they can be laid into different geometric patterns.

The type of plank that you choose really only determines the size of the flooring plank.  You will also want to think about the species of wood and the surface finish as they will define the colour, pattern, grain and texture of the flooring.

Which flooring style should I choose?

Choosing a particular style of flooring is really down to personal preference.  Think about the effect that you want to achieve.  Are you looking for a traditional style of plank flooring that will add timeless appeal and beauty to any space, or do you want something slightly different that you can create patterns with?

The most popular type of solid wood flooring is plank flooring.  It is available in a range of different species of woods, different plank widths and thicknesses and you can also choose the type of finish you would like to the flooring.  With plank solid wood flooring you can choose between a pre-finished floor, which has already had protective coats of oil or lacquer added, or an unfinished floor, where you can add your own colour stains and surface finish.

Parquet block flooring, or Herringbone flooring as it is sometimes known, offers a completely different looking floor.  You still have the beauty of a natural product and the luxury of solid wood but you are able to be more creative.  The small blocks of flooring allow you to create beautiful geometric patterns such as herringbone, basket weave or brick bond.

Regardless of the plank style that you choose, if you opt for solid hardwood flooring you will have a floor that will exude elegance and luxury and will last a lifetime if looked after property.
