Is wooden flooring pet friendly?

Wooden flooring can be good for pets, although you would need to think about how strong and durable the flooring is.  Different wood species have different strengths, so it would be advisable to choose a species that is more durable like Oak, rather than a softer hardwood like Walnut.

Strand Woven Bamboo flooring is even twice as hard as Oak flooring so is the ideal option for large or small pets.

It would be advisable to keep pets claws clipped and as short as possible to minimise the risk of them scratching the surface of the flooring.  If your flooring does become scratched or marked, it can be sanded and re-finished, but this is a major job and should only be carried out by a professional.  Another tip for pets and hardwood flooring is to clean any dirty or wet paws when they come into the house, to reduce dirt, grit and water being left on your hardwood floor, which again could cause damage. One of the big advantages of having a hardwood floor with pets is that it is easy to clean and maintain.

It is quick and easy to sweep everyday with a soft bristle brush and can be cleaned with a wooden floor cleaning spray mop as and when necessary.  Cleaning is usually recommended at least once a week but may be required more often with pets. Also, it is more hygienic than a carpet as any pet hair can easily be swept up rather than getting trodden into the carpet pile.
