Is hardwood flooring good for hallways?

Hardwood flooring can be used in hallways but it is worth thinking about using a harder and durable species of wood.  A hallway or entrance room will often have quite a high and regular amount of traffic passing through so will need a durable hardwood floor to withstand the amount of footfall.

Hardwood flooring is available in many different species of woods, all varying in hardness.  All types of hardwood flooring are measured specifically for hardness and durability.

For more information on this, please see our article: ‘What is the Janka hardness scale for hardwood flooring?’

One of the hardest and most durable species is Jatoba, but it is quite rare, making it extremely expensive.  A good alternative would be Engineered Oak flooring, which has an average hardness and has become a very popular choice recently as it can be found at a reasonable cost and the planks come in a variety of sizes, styles and finishes.

Solid wood floors should also be considered for a hallway or entrance room as they also have the ability to be sanded and re-finished a number of times.  This helps to remove any small scratches and dents that are inevitable with a high traffic area, and once re-finished your hardwood floor will look fresh and new.
