Hardwood floors: Gloss Vs Matt

Deciding which type of flooring finish to have can be a difficult decision. There are three main types of flooring finish available for hardwood floors: Gloss, matt and semi-matt. Your choice will depend upon a number of things including personal taste, the interior décor of the room and the look and feel of your house.

• A gloss finish will provide a high shine floor.

• A matt finish will offer a more natural, dull and non-reflective floor.

• A semi-matt finish is somewhere in between gloss and matt.

Things to consider

• The hardness of all flooring finishes are the same.

• Gloss finishes do have a tendency to show up scratches more than a matt or semi-matt finish.

• Matt or semi-matt finishes help to highlight the natural colour and beauty of the hardwood flooring and give a more natural appearance.

• All types of finish can be sanded and re-finished if the surface becomes dull and loses its lustre.

• All types of finish create a hardwood floor that is protected and quick and easy to maintain.
